Gifted Evaluations

The National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) lists characteristics that gifted individuals often share, including the following:

  • Unusual alertness
  • Rapid learner; puts thoughts together quickly

  • Advanced comprehension of word nuances, metaphors, and abstract ideas
  • Enjoys solving problems
  • Often self-taught reading and writing skills as a preschooler
  • Deep, intense feelings and reactions
  • Thinking is abstract, complex, logical, and insightful
  • Idealism and sense of justice at early age
  • Longer attention span and intense concentration
  • Asks probing questions
  • Wide range of interests (or extreme focus in one area)
  • Highly developed curiosity
  • Interest in experimenting and doing things differently
  • Vivid imagination

Testing provides an objective and systematic way for identifying gifted children by providing scores to describe a child’s performance in relation to others. In Florida, test scores are used as benchmark requirements for entrance into gifted programs.

Although it is sometimes easy to recognize the characteristics of a gifted child at a very young age, according to the NAGC, it is best to wait until your child is at least 6 years old for gifted testing.

Testing for giftedness at Monarch will include a comprehensive intellectual assessment. A test of academic achievement can be added if desired. Please call Monarch’s office in Rockledge if you are interested in having this testing completed with your child.
